Teachers like you work so hard to build classroom communities that embrace every student’s full self. While the work of building inclusive classroom communities is a year-round effort, Pride Month offers a special opportunity to celebrate and affirm the identities of your LGBTQ+ students and fellow educators.
We’ve gathered six educator-approved resources to help you make sure every student knows they belong in your classroom.
1. Supporting LGBTQ+ students: Four strategies to increase inclusivity, via Search Institute
“It is important now more than ever that LGBTQ+ students have access to a supportive and inclusive school climate with positive peer and teacher relationships.”
2. Creating Safer Spaces in Schools for LGBTQ People, via The Trevor Project
“Allies provide important support for LGBTQ young people, especially in the face of increased marginalization; it’s up to teachers, administrators, and fellow students to find ways to show support, because the costs can be devastating.”
3. How Social-Emotional Learning Can Foster LGBTQ Inclusion at School, via Greater Good Magazine
“When used intentionally, SEL can be a powerful, non-divisive path toward cultivating LGBTQ allyship – starting in the earliest years of a child’s development.”
“While we can never ensure that any space is going to be ‘safe’ and affirming one hundred percent of the time, a safe space is a place, group, or community that is intentionally working to affirm LGBTQ people.”
5. Queer America Podcast, via Learning for Justice
“From Learning for Justice and hosts Leila Rupp and John D’Emilio, Queer America takes listeners on a journey that spans from Harlem to the Frontier West, revealing stories of LGBTQ+ life we should have learned in school. This 13-episode series can help educators learn and teach LGBTQ+ history.”
6. How to Make Your School More Welcoming for LGBTQ Families, via Edutopia and Educator Jeremy Majeski
“A school administrator shares what he has learned by talking to gay and lesbian parents about their school experiences.”
